Every
time you gamble, whether you are playing video
poker or any other casino game, you should always
establish guidelines in advance to help you decide
when it’s time to stop. You do this by establishing
a bankroll, or loss limit. If you reach that limit,
it’s time to quit for the day. Maybe your
luck will be better next time.
It’s a little harder to decide when to
quit when you’re winning. However, it’s
important to set guidelines for this in advance
as well. The reason for this is because it is
common for people to go to the casino, win a
large amount of money and then lose it all again
the same day. What good is it to win that money
if you just put it right back into the machines?
If you are winning, you are probably not going
to feel like stopping at all, especially if
you are getting hands that are close to the
royal and you think it might come up soon. But
you need to make sure you don’t keep playing
too long again you start losing again. If you
do, you could lose all of what you’ve
won before you even realize it.
If you start to feel tired, it is probably
a good time to stop playing. Once you are tired,
you will start making mistakes, no matter how
careful you are. Whether you are winning or
losing, you risk making costly errors if you
continue to play when you’re experiencing
fatigue. Go home and rest. You can play again
another day when you are feeling more refreshed.
One good strategy to help ensure that you don’t
lose all of your winnings is to set aside a
certain amount and don’t allow yourself
to spend it. For example, if you have won 150
credits, decide that you will walk away with
50 of them. If you get down to 50 credits left,
stop playing. If you continue winning, increase
the number of tokens to reserve for yourself.
Once you have set a limit for yourself, don’t
cave in when you reach it. If you start losing
again and get back down to the number of tokens
you had decided you would walk away with, it’s
time to walk away. If you make decisions like
this ahead of time, when you’re winning,
it’s easier to walk away from the machine
when you start losing again.
The limits you set for yourself are completely
up to you, of course. You might want to set
aside a third of your winnings, a quarter or
even half, to keep for yourself rather than
continue to put your winnings back into the
game. No one can tell you what limits will work
best for you. The most important thing is to
establish limits for yourself before you even
set foot into the casino, and stick to them.
Try to make your limit for winnings dependent
on how the machines are doing, rather than a
fixed amount. If you set aside a certain amount
of each winning hand and keep from playing it
again, it will keep the possibility of how much
money you can make open-ended, while still giving
you a way to determine when it is time to quit.
If your limit is more concrete, such as leaving
when you have won 150 credits, you could end
up walking away from a hot machine that would
have continued to pay off for awhile longer.
