The Types of Bets in Roulette
Roulette is a game that is based on chance. Before
we discuss the different types of bets, it is
important to understand that one spin does not
influence another. You can get ten red in a row,
or twenty black. It makes no difference. The odds
are still the same for the next spin as they were
for the very first spin. There is still an even
chance of the ball falling into any of the slots
on the roulette wheel. In order to improve your
chances of winning at roulette, you need to understand
the odds.
European or American
When calculating the odds in roulette, the house
advantage is determined by figuring the percentage
of the wheel that is taken up by 0 or 00. In European
roulette, there is 1 zero slot out of 37 total
slots, so the house advantage is 2.7%. In American
roulette, there are two zero slots out of 38 total,
so the house advantage is 5.26%. Bets
to Avoid
The bets to avoid are the ones that have the biggest
difference between the odds and the payouts. The
worst bets are single number bets and five number
bets on a double zero wheel. Good
Bets
The bets that have the best odds are the even
money bets. These are bets on odd, even, high,
low, black or red. All of these bets pay out at
a rate of 1 to 1.
The Best Bet
When playing European roulette, look for a game
offering the ‘en prison’ rule. Under
this rule, if a player bets even and the balls
land on zero, the player does not win or lose
but the player’s bet is held, or ‘imprisoned,’
until after the next spin.
